Why Choose a Chinese Crested as Your Next Companion?

Chinese Crested dogs are wonderful companions for individuals and families alike. They are friendly, highly social, intelligent dogs. They are not prone to becoming obsessively attached to one owner, unlike many other toy breeds. They are small (5-13 lbs.), and make great lap dogs. Smaller individuals are wonderful purse puppies, and love to travel with their owners. They love people of all ages, and get along great with other animals. They are not prone to "yappiness" or sharpness. They are an all-around healthy and long-lived breed. They do not have the typical unpleasant "doggy odor" and are naturally very clean.

 Two Variations on a Theme

Chinese Cresteds can be born with a full coat of luxurious, ultra-soft fur that can grow quite long (the powderpuff), or they can be born hairless, with fur only on their extremities (called "furnishings"). This is due to incomplete dominance in the hairless gene. Both varieties of puppy can be born in the same litter! There are wide ranges of hairlessness in the hairless form - from nearly naked to powderpuff "wanna-be"! Both the hairless and the powderpuff variety are low-dander and low-shedding, and are considered ideal for allergy sufferers (or neat freaks).

Chinese Crested Breed History

Legends abound concerning the origins of these unique little dogs. "Hairless Dogs - The Naked Truth", by Amy Fernandez and Kelly Rhae is an excellent book that goes into great detail concerning the history of all hairless dogs. We recommend this book to all hairless dog fans! Chinese Cresteds are descendants of small hairless dog indigenous to Central and South America. They were used by the ancients in religious ceremonies. They were also used as bed-warmers and living hot water bottles. These dogs were thought to have great medicinal powers. They were even eaten!
